Home Insurance Basics - Part 1

For the next few Weeks, we will be posting Home Insurance Policy basics.

1. What Home Insurance Typically Covers
Standard homeowners insurance (most commonly the HO-3 policy type) generally provides coverage for a broad range of perils, except for those specifically excluded Key coverages include:
  • Dwelling Coverage: Protects the physical structure of your home, including attached structures like a garage, from covered perils such as fire, windstorms, and vandalism.
  • Personal Property Coverage: Helps repair or replace your personal items, such as furniture, electronics, and clothing, if they are stolen or damaged in a covered event.
  • Liability Coverage: Protects you if you, your family members, or even your pets cause injuries or property damage to other people. It can help cover medical and legal fees if you are sued.
  • Additional Living Expenses (ALE) / Loss of Use: If your home becomes uninhabitable due to a covered loss, this coverage helps pay for temporary housing, meals, and other increased living costs while repairs are being made.
